So the last cubbyhole segment will be next Thursday, Sept 20th.

For those who haven't been following, the cubbyhole has been an attempt to go letter by letter through our voluminous record library. For each letter I picked out a small 75-100 record section and programmed the first hour from this limited selection.

The letters Q, X & Z didn't have enough variety to support one show, so I'll take Jonny B's advice and combine them into one set each for this last go-around.

After that I think I'm kinda done with themes for awhile. It'll actually be refreshing to get re-acquainted with my own record library, something I'm usually loathe to do.

I'm behind on the new music reviews, as job responsibilities continue to conspire with life responsibilities to keep me away from the station and consequently this blog. Hopefully I can catch up soon.

The cubbyhole feature has just about run its course, there's maybe one of two shows left at the end of the alphabet. Didn't look like we had enough X candidates (despite X, Xymox and XTC) and the Y and Z sections are dominated by single artists (Neil Young and Frank Zappa respectively) which makes it difficult to come up with the 20 or so bands I need to do it right. We'll see how it all works out on Monday.

The next two weeks I'll be temporarily switching over to Mondays ... that's June 4th and 11th. Super sub Will will handle the June 7th duties while the newest BoC dj Sara takes care of June 14th. Thanks to them both!

The past two weeks the first hour of the show has been taken up by a favorite new feature I'm calling the Cubbyhole. Down in the WMBR library our walls are lined with wooden shelves and dividers containing our voluminous vinyl collection. I can't recall the exact number but there's somewhere around 600 of these 'cubbyholes' with rock records in total, each holding around 75-100 lps each. From major label hits to incredibly obscure self-releases, they're side-by-side in alphabetical order.

With this amazing amount of choices at my fingertips I often get frustrated by the lack of available time to explore our treasures. So I've decided to pick one section a week and exclusively use records from that section to program the show.

It's going to be an uneven experience, but hopefully a fruitful one as well. Those who enjoy hearing random long-buried 15+ year old obscurities mixed in with a few old favorites should find it to your liking. If you prefer our programming to be comprised of more recognizable and noteworthy artists, well this may not be for you.

Feel free to request certain letter combinations or make comments. I'm not making any promises but it's always nice to get feedback.

One of the tools I use to program the 2nd half of the show, or New Music Hour, are sampler compilations I create down at the station. Basically I'll scan through all the new releases and upon finding a promising song will burn it. One song per disc only. Once I have 80 minutes of stuff down to CD-R it goes, which allows me to listen closer in the car or at work. From there the stuff that catches my ear gets programmed into the show.
